24 June: 45.6 miles from Bristol to Taunton; up onto the Mendips, down through Cheddar Gorge. The scenery was stunning but the weather was a real challenge - we started early from near the Avon Gorge, dropped down through Long Ashton and then across to the East of Bristol Airport. The climb up onto the Mendips was tough. Izzy worked hard and we eventually came out onto the open, relatively flat top of the limestone. Of course, going up can always be countered by a descent and the one through Cheddar Gorge was exhilarating (especially when trying to film it on a GoPro - must get something to attach it to my helmet!). After a quick coffee / smoothie, we headed off across the Levels, through Wedmore and onto Shapwick. The heat was intense and the cycling fairly dull; we both started feeling the journey. A stop at Burrowbridge reinvigorated for a while, but we decided to call it a day at Durston, approximately 5 miles from home. Despite not quite getting home, this was a really positive day: good distance in testing conditions.
