Day Fifteen: A lovely day....apart from Telford!
Winsford to Telford. 50.09 miles. Total: 661.64 miles
The sun was out, the cycling was good and the morning flew past with the two of us able to ride side-by-side and chat. We had covered 14 miles by the time we met Mum and Dad (our wonderful support crew for the past week) for coffee, and Izzy put in an order for a lunchtime milkshake. We headed on through the Cheshire / Shropshire countryside, enjoying delightful little villages but not overly impressed by the odd speeding driver, until we reached Market Drayton for lunch. The route through the town seemed rather circuitous and we noticed that by heading along the Shropshire Union canal we could go direct to the lunch meeting point. We rode along until the map showed that we were at the spot where the road crossed the canal, only to find that it was actually the canal crossing the road, and doing so on a 30m high bridge! Luckily there were steps down to the road and we man-handled the bikes down the steep stair before meeting Mum and Dad the other side of the canal. The afternoon saw the weather closing in as we sped towards Telford via an annoying road closure before Newport. We always knew that a long day would finish with a climb into Telford and this was not only tough but also dull, as we followed a cycle path past roundabout after roundabout. It has to be said that, so far, there is nothing much to say about Telford. It seems utterly soulless and we can't wait to leave (the hotel was nice!).
